Recommended Reading: Gavan Daws   (November 16, 2006)

I have been fortunate enough to begin an occasional correspondence with Honolulu-based author Gavan Daws, who wrote the modern classic of Hawaiian history, Shoal of Time. It's quite a thrill for a struggling unknown like myself to receive an email from a writer who I consider a literary giant in his field, and even more astonishing when he asks for a copy of my novel I-State Lines. (FWIW he liked it.)

If you have any interest in Hawaii, I recommend Gavan's history, which has remained in print for decades:

Shoal of Time a History of the Hawaiian Islands.

Given the recent resurgence of interest in World War II, you might also be interested in his riveting (and horrifying) history of the Pacific Theatre Allied prisoners of the Japanese: Prisoners of the Japanese : Pows of World War II in the Pacific.

Once you click on either of these links to amazon.com, you can navigate to Gavan's other titles as well. As always, feel free to read about the books on amazon and then go borrow them from your local public library.
