New Features
I'm awaiting scheduling in January of a feature for the Chronicle on designing homeless shelters; the lead resource is Sam Davis, UC-Berkeley architecture professor and architect who has just finished a book on the subject. Stay tuned.

Travels in November/December 2003
We spent a month in Japan and Thailand in November-December--quite a challenge to pack one small bag for the chill of Nikko and Nagano and the 36 C (90 F) heat of Bangkok.... but we pulled it off, and made it home just in time to enter the holiday gift/card/food frenzy. Hopefully I can post a bit of my travel journal in the coming months.

Recent Film/Book Review Additions
Had a chance to see "Gate of Hell" (1953, directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa) and "Streets of Shame" (1956, directed by Mizoguchi), two classics of japanese cinema, both worth seeing.

Rock-N-Roll is here to stay
Richard recently mastered "Jurassic Rock #3: Live From Hawaiian Homes Hall," a selection of tunes from our October '03 jam in Waimea; it contains a wicked version of "Black Magic Woman" with screaming guitar leads and vocals from the crew (Richard Mitchell, Gayland Baker, Steve Toma and myself), but for now you'll have to revel in these two cuts from the June gig: just click on the titles to start Windows Media Player:
All Along the Watchtower         Under My Thumb

Note: if you have a broadband connection, they'll buffer in a few seconds; if you have a dial-up connection, it will take awhile.

Oh yeah, I turned fifty in December
Just to prove geezerhood ain't all bad, check out this print of me enjoying a splendid afternoon at Makaha Beach during our June '03 visit. The pale European guys in their little spandex trunks we saw in Thailand didn't quite know what to make of my baggies...but hey, they're clueless about so much....
